Dr. Ben K. Humphrey (March 20, 1918 – August 19, 1973) was a physician, rancher, military veteran, and community leader whose life was marked by service in medicine, agriculture, and public affairs in southern Idaho. Born in Moscow, Idaho, he was the son of Elmer and Mary Humphrey. He graduated from the University of Idaho in 1939 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Engineering. Shortly thereafter, he entered military service, serving in the U.S. Army Infantry from 1939 to 1946 during World War II and the immediate postwar period. After leaving the Army, Humphrey pursued a medical career, earning his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Colorado on June 10, 1950. He completed his internship at St. Anthony Hospital in Denver, Colorado, finishing in July 1951. Along with his wife, Dr. Evelyn Martindale Humphrey, he served on the staffs of St. Benedict's Hospital in Jerome, Idaho, and Odom Hospital in Memphis, Texas, before joining the medical staff of Minidoka Memorial Hospital in Rupert in 1965. In addition to his medical practice, Dr. Humphrey was deeply involved in ranching and business interests. He was president of the Flying B Ranch Corporation and owned and operated a ranch east of Paul, Idaho. The family residence was at 1220 F Street in Rupert. He was also active in professional organizations, including the South Central Idaho Medical Society, the Idaho State Medical Society, and the American Medical Association. On August 19, 1973, Dr. Humphrey, his wife Evelyn, and their sons Brian and Steve were killed when their private aircraft crashed in the rugged wilderness near the Flying B Ranch in the Salmon National Forest. The family had been returning from a two-week vacation in Canada and time spent at the ranch. A forest patrol aircraft spotted smoke from the wreckage, leading searchers to the remote crash site approximately 42 air miles south of Salmon, Idaho. At the time of his death, Dr. Humphrey was survived by his sons Russel Humphrey, who was participating in an educational trip in Holland, and Michael Humphrey of Boston, Massachusetts, as well as a sister, Mrs. Taylor. Funeral services were held on August 23, 1973, at the First Christian Church in Rupert, with burial following in Rupert Cemetery. Dr. Humphrey's career reflected a rare combination of military service, medical practice, and agricultural leadership, leaving a lasting impact on the Rupert and Minidoka County communities he served.
