| Biografia | Died at age 63 in Los Angeles, California. Civil War veteran and Captain of Company C, 189th Ohio Volunteer Infantry (mustered in 4 Mar 1865; regiment attached to the 4th Army Corps under Gen. Thomas, garrison duty in Alabama, mustered out at Nashville, Tennessee, 29 Oct 1865, discharged at Camp Chase, Ohio). Military information found on NARA film M522 Roll 9. Earlier Civil War service: helped recruit and organize the 51st Ohio Infantry and was commissioned Captain of Company B, but resigned that commission. In July 1863 he recruited a company of the Ohio National Guard and was mustered in as Captain of Company A, 161st Ohio Volunteer Infantry, serving in the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, with Sheridan at Winchester (2nd Division, 6th Army Corps); he was under fire about thirty-six hours in that engagement and had two balls shot through his clothing and three through his hat. That regiment was discharged 28 Oct 1864. In September 1866 he came to Washington County, Iowa, bought 177 acres on section 24, Dutch Creek Township, and farmed; in 1869 he sold half the land and bought 90 acres, eventually farming 190 acres and raising Percheron horses and Poland-China hogs. He was a member of the Moravian Church and of the Masonic fraternity, and a Republican who cast his first vote in 1856 for John C. Fremont. Was listed in the Mountain View Cemetery directory inventoried by the DAR in 1930-1933, compiled by Margaret J. Schulz, and published by The Southern California Genealogical Society, Burbank, California. Was mentioned in an article in the Pasadena Star, 29 May 1902, page 6, column 3: "Complete list of the soldier graves contained in the local cemetery and to be decorated by the veterans tomorrow." Listed in the Soldiers and Sailors System: https://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/ Obituary (Los Angeles Times, 1 September 1898, page 13): "J. F. Blickensderfer, a farmer, aged 63 years, died this afternoon at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Anna Romig, in North Pasadena. He came here about eighteen months ago from Washington, Iowa. He had been an invalid for a long time. The burial will be at Mountain View." Portrait and Biographical Album, Washington County, Iowa (1887), pages 597-598: "Capt. J. F. Blickensderfer, residing on section 24, Dutch Creek Township, is engaged in general farming and stock-raising.
